Blessed with wonderful weather and a competitive field of golfers from around the Valley, our 60th Annual Banana Belt Golf Tournament truly lived up to all expectations. Our own Andrew Schutt (144) collected Low Gross of the Field while Rich Wyer (135) of the Tri-Cities took home Low Net of the Field. For a full rundown of Gross and Net winners of the two flights, please go to Tournament Results located on this web page. Special thanks goes out Banana Belt Chairperson Zoe Wilson for her hard work, our grounds crew under the direction of Superintendent Benito Benitez for their outstanding work in preparing the golf course, the kitchen staff under the direction of Delores Barrett for the excellent food and finally, the hard work of our volunteers that made the Banana Belt a special event.
The Ryder Cup Match between Mt. Adams and Blackrock Creek is still 45 days away and anticipation is already building for this battle with our friends from Toppenish. Organizer Sean Tudor will soon have a sign-up sheet in the Pro Shop for those wanting to participate. The field has been increased to twenty players from sixteen and do not be surprised if some players may have to play their way onto the team. We want to field our best players in order to bring back the Cup to Sunnyside.
Max’s Group closed the month of August out with Doug Veach (13.66) narrowly defeating Art Pitillo (13.31) to win top honors. Ken Herber (11.34) finished all alone in third place. Max’s Group play every Monday and Thursday and everyone is welcome to turnout starting at 8:30.
The ballots on the removal of the tree on the corner of the 14th hole was tallied by our Board of Directors at their last meeting on August 25th. The final count showed the members do not want to remove the tree.
Thoughts and prayers still go out to Rick Mitoff as he battles serious health issues.
